Relatively Boring, All Things Considered.
My average day is pretty boring. If I'm not in class, I'm in the lobby of my dorm hanging out with my friends, which usually involves all of us either watching YouTube together, or playing games together. Less than six hours of my total day is spent in my room, and the number is only that high because that's about how many hours of sleep I usually get.
So what are we watching when we're 'vibing' in the lobby? Well, I can't really say for sure. At any given time, anything could be on the TV. As I type right now, my friend is playing a video game but in 15 minutes, we could be watching an episode of Hell's Kitchen.
The viewing habits of my friend group are slightly different than mine. Of course, we all like watching meme videos when we're bored or video game playthroughs, but I often find their interests are a lot louder than mine. Let me walk you through my viewing habits.
My prime source of entertainment comes from YouTube. I haven't watched regular television in over five years. Most of my view time comes from my PlayStation (through the YouTube app) and only a little from my laptop. However, that will change during the breaks we have from school, as I normally watch YouTube in bed after I'm done playing games. At school, I'm not on my laptop too often unless I'm working on something.
So what do I like to watch on YouTube? Well, not a whole lot. I've found that I've lost interest in the platform over the years, resulting in the lack of enjoyment from most content on the website. There are very few YouTube channels that I enjoy watching and that may only last for a few weeks at most. Some channels last longer than others though. Some YouTube channels that I'm currently enjoying are LockPickingLawyer, Girlfriend Reviews, BrownMan, and Terrible Writing Advice. I'll give you a quick rundown of each so you can get a sense of my daily feed.
LockPickingLawyer is exactly that, a lock picking lawyer. No one knows the identity of the channel owner, though he does practice law in the Washington D.C. area. His videos usually consist of him reviewing a lock, in which he lays out the security flaws, reviews the lock, gives his personal thoughts, and if he can pick the lock (spoiler: he can always pick the lock). You know you've made a bad lock when the video is shorter than three minutes.
Girlfriend Reviews is an interesting take on the review genre of video. The channel reviews video games, but not from the perspective of playing them. Girlfriend Reviews reviews games from the perspective of watching someone play the game in question, as her boyfriend does all the playing. She is actually one of the few reviewers that I trust for informative game reviews.
BrownMan is a gaming channel. He doesn't upload exclusively YouTube content, rather he streams on the streaming platform Twitch for a living. His channel is made up of highlights from his streams. He's one of my favorite content creators and is the source for my particular brand of comedy.
Lastly, Terrible Writing Advice is a helpful channel that can definitely help with writers block for creative writing. All of the videos give 'bad' advice, wherein the narrator says something like, "You definitely want a mary-sue as your main character," in which case you now know that you definitely do not want a mary-sue as your main character. As a creative writer, specifically interested in world building, the channel is a very useful source for ideas.
So I lied a little. All of my entertainment doesn't come from YouTube. I watch a little bit of Netflix here and there, but very little. I'm currently watching The Witcher with my girlfriend. It's the first show I've watched on Netflix in over a year, as I find binge watching pretty boring. I'm also the kind of person who can't watch a show and do something else at the same time so if I'm going to watch something, it will have my full attention. Shows like The Office, Parks and Recreation, Community, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are made to have on in the background, but that's something I can't do.
Stepping away from YouTube, I play a lot of video games. According to PlayStation, I played over 1500 hours of video games in 2019. To do the math for you, that's over 62 days of playing video games. I actually want to beat that number this year, as I feel like last year was a down year for me.
Some games I'm currently playing are The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Rainbow Six Siege, Hitman (2016), Death Stranding, Stars Wars Battlefront II, Project Cars 2, and Red Dead Redemption II.
I don't have much else to say, but I did fail to mention that I'm a big sports fan and I do find time to catch a few games. The cable that SAU supplies doesn't really satisfy what I'd like to watch, especially since I'm not a Cowboys fan. I usually track down a livestream online of what I want to watch, as I don't have the funds for any subscriptions. This website I use is pretty illegal, but it gets the job done.
That's all I've really got. I'm gonna go play some video games. See you Thursday!
